What is Pinnacle Peak WiFi HotSpot?
Pinnacle Peak WiFi HotSpot provides WiFi wireless broadband Internet service in public locations located primarily in resort communities. Using either a laptop or handheld that is WiFi 802.11b wirelessly-enabled, you can access the Internet or your corporate intranet at speeds up to 50 times faster than dial-up.
What do I need to access the service?
You will need three things to begin using a Pinnacle Peak WiFi HotSpot. First you will need a laptop or handheld with WiFi 802.11b wireless capability. When your device is wireless-enabled, you will need to set your SSID (or network identifier) to the site’s designated SSID upon login. Refer to your wireless network card documentation for specific instructions on how to make this change.
Second, you will need a standard Internet-ready browser on any operating system. No additional software is required.
Third, you will need a Pinnacle Peak WiFi rate plan. Pinnacle Peak WiFi HotSpot has a full line of service plans to meet the needs of any mobile user - from our Hourly and Daily plans for the occasional user to our annual and month-to-month subscription plans for the more frequent user.
How fast is the Pinnacle Peak WiFi HotSpot service?
Each Pinnacle Peak WiFi service location has a full T1 connection, which provides users with speeds of up to 1.5 Mbps. The WiFi 802.11b technology allows for speeds up to 11 Mbps, but throughput is governed by the speed at which the device is connected.
How does the service work?
Pinnacle Peak WiFi installs access points throughout each service location, which transmit a radio signal wirelessly to a user's WiFi 802.11b wireless network card. With a properly installed wireless network card, a customer launches their browser from within a Pinnacle Peak WiFi service location and receives a log-in page to enter their user name and password. Once their account information is verified, they are able to connect to Internet resources. With full connectivity to the Internet, customers can access any Internet resources, as well as any corporate networks to which they have access from the Internet.
Can I access my corporate network using a Pinnacle Peak WiFi HotSpot?
If your employer has provided you with a virtual private network (VPN) client and a firewall, you can seamlessly access your corporate network. Pinnacle Peak WiFi strongly recommends that its customers take measures to ensure the security of their wireless connections, such as virtual private networks (VPNs), encryption and firewalls. As with any wireless communication, the Pinnacle Peak WiFi HotSpot service is not inherently secure and you should ensure you have adequate security safeguards in place. See the Security Statement on the signup page for information concerning the security of the service and steps you can take to enhance the security of the service.
What operating systems are currently compatible with the service?
Pinnacle Peak WiFi HotSpot is not OS-specific, and will work with any operating systems as long as there is a compatible, Internet-ready browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
How do I know if my wireless network card is supported by Pinnacle Peak WiFi?
Pinnacle Peak WiFi HotSpot is a WiFi 802.11b network; therefore, any WiFi certified wireless network card will work. Look for the WiFi certification on the wireless network card before purchasing it.
Can I access my personal e-mail account through my Pinnacle Peak WiFi HotSpot account?
You can access any Web-based e-mail account such as Yahoo Mail or Hotmail. You can also access corporate e-mail accounts if your employer provides you with a virtual private network (VPN) client and a firewall.
